The canton of Geneva is located in the middle of the franco-valdo-genevese valley. It is bordered by the Swiss canton of Vaud, and the French departments of Ain and Haute-Savoie. Since the 1960s this genevese area has been experiencing strong demographic growth.
This evolution has a contrasting influence on the territory as the urban areas become indistinguishable because of the geographical, cultural, linguistic and historical links.
The application of bilateral agreements has reinforced the interchanges inside
the community in terms of way of life and interests.

The heavy daily flow of the population, generates numerous problems which have
a strong impact on the quality of life of the inhabitants of the franco-valdo-genevese
region. Between now and 2020, a 50 per cent increase in movement is foreseen.
This phenomena must be addressed immediately by the construction of a regional public transport network.
The CEVA rail link will offer the possibility to cross one district to another, one shore to another, one city to another, and one country to another.
Five new railway stations conceived by the Jean Nouvel Studio will mark
out the rail link between Cornavin and Annemasse.

A number of sites, presently unexploited, will be transformed into activity sectors
and housing areas. About 18 hectares ideally situated in the heart of the city will be developed (The Praille, Eaux-Vives and Chêne-bourg).
